How to Manufacture a Business in One Year

27 Jan 2020

Not many people are able to grow a business from scratch and turn it into a venture that keeps so busy you need to change the entire manufacturing process just to be able to keep up with demand. Fudi Zheng, owner of John's Kitchens was able to achieve this feat, all in the space of only one year.

Fudi's original production process was to purchase kitchens pre-cut and assembled from a third party. While this approach worked for a short while, Fudi quickly found that they were simply getting to busy, and he needed more control over the quality and turnaround time to best serve John's Kitchens customers.

"We service both builders and private customers, so we have to make sure that the quality of the products we're providing are up to scratch," said Fudi. "Our goal is to offer the best customer service at an affordable price."

With no two projects the same, flexibility in manufacturing was a key factor in deciding which machines would make it into their factory. "We spent two weeks in serious discussions with SCM Group Australia and a large competitor," said Fudi. "Due to the quality of European designed and built machine, we decided that SCM Group Australia was the best fit for us. We decided to invest in a K360 TERI Edgebander, an Si400 EPC Panel Saw, and a Morbidelli N100 Nesting Machine."

With a focus on bespoke designs, John's Kitchens is now able to visit a customer, design the projects onsite, bring back information to the factory and send data straight to the machinery for production. "I was even able to go on holiday to China and continue production from there," said Fudi. "All I had to do was send the information to the machine for uninterrupted manufacturing.

A major cost savings for John's Kitchens since installing their SCM machines has been a reduction in time and labour. "the cost of purchasing the Morbidelli N100 is negligent when considering the labour costs associated with prodcuing the same kitchen manually," said Fudi. "The K360 TER1 has also saved us a significant amount of time as we no longer need to clean edges once panels have been through the edgebander."

John's Kitchens' first project after investing in the Morbidelli N100 was a full house fit out valued at more than $400,000, a job they were able to deliver on time and in budget thanks to their new ability to process cuts automatically.

"Investing in our SCM machines has made John's Kitchens more profitable," said Fudi. "We're now able to compete at every level and offer quick turnaround at an afforable price."

"The support we recieved from our sales rep, Jose Ojeda, was invaluable. Without him we never would have entered into the investment," said Fudi. "Our experience with SCM Group Australia from the very start, as well as the return on investment we've already seen from their machines, has far exceeded our expectations."
