Design Week 2026: SCM partners with DropCity for advanced design and woodworking labs

One year after the inauguration of Woodshop - the advanced public woodworking laboratory created by DropCity in partnership with SCM at the former Magazzini Raccordati in Milan - the lab’s spaces and machines are ready to deliver new highlights for Design Week 2026.
From April 19 to 26, Woodshop and SCM’s high-end technology will take center stage in a project developed by DropCity together with the University of Copenhagen, focused on the reuse and regeneration of wood processing waste.
The initiative aims to demonstrate how waste materials can be transformed into new materials and components through research, experimentation, and advanced processing, with an open, public-oriented and educational approach.

Activities will take place across the two Woodshop tunnels:

  • Tunnel 58 – Exhibit Area
Focus on research, development of new materials, and waste transformation processes through the use of technologies, software, and AI applications.

  • Tunnel 60 – Workshop Area
Focus on the use of CNC machining centers: SCM’s “All-In-One Technology” morbidelli m100 drilling and milling center will be used for 5-axis machining, with live demonstrations and real-time prototyping of design products using new materials derived from wood waste.

An exclusive installation, the “Acoustic Wall,” featuring refined 3D textures, will be created from the lab activities, perfectly combining the concepts of reuse and high-end design.

For this edition of Design Week 2026, DropCity and SCM place the woodworking lab at the forefront as a space for co-working, hands-on experimentation, and knowledge sharing.
It is an open and functional environment spanning over 600 square meters, equipped with a selection of cutting-edge technologies available to designers, professionals, and students who want to put their skills into practice and directly turn their furniture ideas into reality.

The machines supplied by SCM meet the main production requirements in panel processing, offering a complete workflow aligned with the latest market trends.
CNC machining centers for drilling, routing, and nesting, edge banding solutions, sanding technologies, and joinery machines: each technology has been selected to ensure high levels of versatility and processing quality across a wide range of projects and materials, including next-generation ones.

These solutions also stand out for their operator interface software, Maestro active, which enables fast and intuitive control of all machine functions, ensuring a consistent look & feel and interaction across all SCM machines. Also noteworthy is the Maestro lab CAD/CAM programming software used with the CNC machining centres: intuitive and dynamic, it allows users to turn ideas into finished products with ease, thanks to intelligent and technologically advanced programming features.

During Milano Design Week, from April 20 to 26, visitors will also have the opportunity to tour the SCM-Superfici Technology Center in Villasanta, in Brianza, where live technical demonstrations will showcase a wide range of surface treatment solutions and processes dedicated to secondary wood processing. The Center will be open from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM (Monday to Friday), by appointment only, by contacting scm@scmgroup.com
