Taking Sanding to the Next Level
3 Mar 2020It’s the finer details that count when building a new house, and a bespoke staircase is one element that can really take the design of a home to the next level.
Steven King has worked with Coastal Joinery for 15 years and been the owner for the last 3 years. With a team of experienced joiners, Coastal Joinery specialises in creating custom made, one-off staircases for mid to high end clients. When designing and creating bespoke pieces, making sure the factory is fitted with the right machinery has been key to Coastal Joinery’s success.
“As we’ve started getting busier and busier over the last few years, our old sander simply wasn’t up to the task anymore,” said Steven. “I wasn’t happy with the finishing standard it was producing, so I decided it was time to take the next step and upgrade.”
After spending some time hunting through secondhand machines online and declining a competitor quote on a machine that was far too big and expensive for their needs, Coastal Joinery approached SCM Group Australia to assist in choosing the right machine for their requirements.
“It turned out to be more economical to buy a new machine rather than secondhand,” said Steven. “Buying a new machine also allowed me to be very specific in the features I needed in a sander. SCM Group Australia were able to deliver on every aspect.”
“While the RCS is still a little more heavy-duty than what we need at the moment, we will certainly grow into it in the coming years.”
Incorporating their new wide belt sander into the existing factory space proved to be a quick and easy process. With some slight modifications to power and dust extraction, it was only a few days from delivery to having the team trained up and running.
“The RCS is really easy to use, and we found it had a big impact on improving production quite quickly,” said Steven. “It’s taking us about a third of the time to get through the same amount of sanding, and we’re getting a much better calibrated finish. Working with stairs usually means we need to fit to a small environment and the RCS allows us to adjust cuts perfectly to get an exact fit every time”
The future for Coastal Joinery is looking bright. They are looking at scaling up their production, bringing in an Operations Manager to help cope with an influx of high-end projects, and further building up their warehouse.
