A Table Like No Other

7 Sep 2017

At the recent SCM R-Evolution exhibition at the SCM Sydney showroom, a unique bespoke piece of furniture was on display for the very first time. Created by Ian Dolan of Recycled Timbers, the slab was taken from a unique Sequoia tree (Californian Redwood) at the Mt Tomah Botanic Gardens after being struck by lightning. The Californian Redwood is a slow growing softwood and is one of the largest trees in the world with some having a life span of between 1200 – 1800 years, a height of 115.5 meters and up to 7.9 meters in diameter.

Deemed a safety risk to garden visitors, Recycled Timbers removed the tree remnants and had it broken into 3 pieces. One piece was used to create the table now sitting in the Sydney showroom, and the other pieces will be used to create unique furniture pieces. Determined to respect the natural beauty of the tree, Ian Dolan designed the slab table so that the raw state of the wood would be conserved. The resulting piece is a magnificent bench table more than 8 metres long.
